lorelei: To prepare for these essays, you probably want mostly examples. (As Q and Shrike point out, you don’t have to be a fantastic writer, but you do have to follow the directions, and having a mental library of examples makes it easier to do that.) For that, just following the newspaper can be fine. You can also make examples up, of course, and history or any other area you’re familiar with works just as well as (or better than) news.

Talk about giving birth…
The best part is right now, a mere 12 hours after launch, I already have five e-mails from teachers wanting to help develop the site. YES!!! My little 7-minute overview of the power of the read/write Web to our ENTIRE faculty (all 250+) seems to have sparked some interest.

Did I know this? Technology and Learning’s School Site of the Month for March is Anne’s “Write Weblog“. Well deserved.

People often ask what they should be reading to get used to the style and topics they’ll encounter on the Verbal Reasoning section.
In General
The standard advice, which is good, is to read magazines like The Economist, The Atlantic, and The New Yorker. These magazines generally have good writing in essay format. There are, of course, other magazines that work as well. Don’t use Time or Newsweek for this purpose, although you may enjoy them to keep up on current events; they’re not written at a very high level.
