lorelei: To prepare for these essays, you probably want mostly examples. (As Q and Shrike point out, you don’t have to be a fantastic writer, but you do have to follow the directions, and having a mental library of examples makes it easier to do that.) For that, just following the newspaper can be fine. You can also make examples up, of course, and history or any other area you’re familiar with works just as well as (or better than) news.

Talk about giving birth…
The best part is right now, a mere 12 hours after launch, I already have five e-mails from teachers wanting to help develop the site. YES!!! My little 7-minute overview of the power of the read/write Web to our ENTIRE faculty (all 250+) seems to have sparked some interest.
I’ll be making sites all day…as long as the 7,453 other initiatives we put into place this summer don’t all crash and burn on this, the first day back for kids.

Did I know this? Technology and Learning’s School Site of the Month for March is Anne’s “Write Weblog“. Well deserved.
It can’t be said enough…Anne does such great work with blogs and elementary school kids, and she’s really giving them a passion for writing. I can think of few better models for the technology. She works hard to highlight their best work, to celebrate their successes, and to capitalize on the teachable moments. It’s inspiring!

Money withheld from 7 schools Researchers want test scores for voucher studyBy SARAH CARR

The state is withholding money from seven Milwaukee voucher schools that have failed to comply with one of the most ambitious studies ever to look at vouchers, and it appears that will prompt some of them to hand over their test scores.

Talks set on MPS special ed By SARAH CARR

Since a federal judge ruled this month that Milwaukee Public Schools failed to provide special education services to children who needed them, the different sides have agreed to meet for a series of talks throughout the fall.
