Religious schools do not have a blanket exemption from the state's anti-discrimination laws, the 4th District Court of Appeals found in a decision released last week that might be precedent-setting.

Linda Perlstein grew up on the North Shore and graduated from Nicolet High School in 1988. She worked for The Washington Post from 1994 to 2004, most of the time writing about schools and kids. Her 2003 book, "Not Much Just Chillin'," about the lives of middle school students, is now in its seventh printing, and her new book, "Tested: One American School Struggles to Make the Grade," has been widely praised. The book focuses on Tyler Heights Elementary School in Annapolis, Md., where low-income students receive a high-pressure education aimed at doing well on Maryland's standardized tests and meeting the goals of the No Child Left Behind federal education law. Perlstein was in Milwaukee and talked with the Journal Sentinel's Alan J. Borsuk.
