Cool 7th Grade Science Blogs

October 17, 2007

So this 7th grade “Exploring Our Dynamic Earth” blog (with the very appropriate tag line of “Using blogs to learn”) is an interesting example of how RSS can be woven into the work. The front matter is all done by placing feeds from a host of class blogs and a few science news feeds (including a latest earthquake feed) for pretty easy viewing. Click on one of the headline links and it will take you to a specific blog where teachers are posting some pretty thought-provoking assignments and students are engaging in some pretty impressive conversation through the comments.

Back online?

October 17, 2007

Wouldn’t you know it? Something happened to the anvil server on Wednesday and I just now got it up and going following the remote directions Tim gave me. Prior to this moment, it just would not work. Those are the things I want to learn! The calendar is a little strange and pictures are not working right but that, hopefully, can be fixed later. Alright! Back online, hooray! Isn’t it insane how disconnected you feel when you can’t get to your blog? I’m not going to think too long about what that means.

The Emotional Side of Self-Learning

October 17, 2007

My good friend and new blogger Rob Mancabelli writes about the challenges of schooling in a world of extended, global connections and information in terms not just of the literacies this more complex environment demands but the emotional toll as well. His thoughts come on the heels of a conversation with a principal who was concerned that
students were seeking out and locating more and more emotionally packed information on their own time, often by themselves, causing them to come to our schools each day laden with a plethora of undiscussed feelings, questions and ideas.

Loving Moodle so far!

October 17, 2007

So I have had a few days with a fresh install of Moodle 1.7 Beta and so far it has been a fun ride. I have to admit that it was a little foolish of me to attempt to learn a new piece of software with a new and fairly buggy release (I downloaded it when it first came out on October 10 and installed after my last post, so it was a little stale) but nonetheless it has been good. I had a few errors and ultimately had to delete the entire install and start over, but it has been a fantastic learning experience. Here are some of the things that I like so far and how I have implemented outside tools.

Schools cast wider net for minorities UWM, Marquette admitted more but enrolled fewer this fallBy ERICA PEREZ
eperez@journalsentinel.comPosted: Oct. 16, 2007

If you had looked last spring at the number of minority students accepted at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Marquette University, you'd probably have thought the schools were on track to boost the ranks of minority students this fall.
