Technology in Meet Space

March 31, 2008

There have been a spate of posts of late that talk about the role of technology in general and Web 2.0 technologies specifically in the classroom and also about the larger question of the acceptance of technology in general as a teaching and learning tool. Not surprising, is it, that these threads would pop up as school begins, at least here in the Western World.

Jeff Utecht started by writing about “Transition Techies” and lamenting the fact that technology is still seen as an option to most educators, not a requirement.

Toddler tech demand

March 31, 2008

A parameter-adjusting posting on the Wikinomics blog today is titled Thanks for the doll but I want your mobile phone. It is not the parents who need to read what Wikinomics reports: the parents are getting it from their own toddlers. Everyone who expects to have a role in future education needs to know what this post tells us about the children who are now starting school and even those too young for pre-school. Here is a sample, though I recommend you read it all by clicking the title above:

49 Captive Superintendents-One Message

March 30, 2008

So, I get the chance to address 49 Superintendents in Upstate NY on Thursday. I’ve got some ideas of what I plan to show them about the power and potential of the Read/Write Web, about what teachers and students are already doing, and about the obstacles that we need to begin having serious conversations about. But I’m wondering, if you had 90 minutes with this group, what one thing would you bring up/point to/challenge them with? What would be your most important message?

Spellbound by a Podcast

March 29, 2008

Ewan McIntosh pointed me to this amazing poetry podcast from Sandaig

Primary in Glasgow, Scotland. The students celebrated National Poetry

day 2005 by writing a Keepers Poem. The poem was inspired by The

Keepers Poetry Project which is inspired by the original Keepers poem

by Phil Whitehead. John Johnston is the teacher who put this incredible

project together. These children are in primary 2 to 7. They wrote 150 verses, blogged them and then

Another fan of Bloom?s

March 28, 2008

I received a comment from Barbara Dieu in reference to my “Blooming” Webloggers post. She is also a fan of Bloom’s taxonomy. She pointed to an excellent resource, Key Words and How to Proceed, that she has created for Bloom’s. I can’t wait to share this with my students this Thursday.

Her weblog, Bee-Online, is a meeting place for students to share opinions and discuss. There are links there that point to the student blogs. I enjoyed browsing through them this morning. Barbara has also created a rubric to evaluate the blogs.

Thinking Out Loud

March 28, 2008

At my school, I am often sought out for technology ideas. For instance, my school is really good about publicizing the things I do with blogs and wikis. When The Atlanta Jewish Times called the school looking to speak with educators about their use of technology, my colleagues made sure the reporter, Suzi Brozman, talked to me. They are really supportive of what I do with technology, and they seem really interested in the applications available. My colleagues, in short, see me as a leader in integrating technology into the classroom. But I’m not nearly doing enough. So much more could be done! A cursory glance at the things Lisa Huff (no relation — I don’t think!) is doing with her students was enough to tell me that. I was quite humbled by what I saw — saving and sharing her posts in Google Reader left and right. Here is what I want to do next year:

Middle of the Road or the High Road?

March 27, 2008

I was asked this week to do some instructional design work; something I haven’t done for a while. As we discussed the work, and of course the monetary compensation, I confirmed what I had written in So you want to be an eLearning Consultant? for eLearn Magazine.  This Pedagogical Design/Development work will pay within the range I described in the Table of the article. On the other hand, I’ve just finished an evaluation of an LMS and the work figured within the remuneration that I described for Technological work; about five times the rate of the development work.

You Can?t Be Too Careful

March 27, 2008

Not that I’m paranoid or anything, but I am doing whatever I can not to have the ending of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows spoiled for me.  As of this moment, I’m filtering e-mails.  I will go into Harry Potter hibernation at midnight tomorrow, and I don’t expect to catch up with online activities until some time mid-week next week.  Thanks for understanding if it takes me a while to get back to your e-mails or approve comments.  See you on the other side!
