Building 21st Century Cities using 21st Century Skills

Earlier this week TechYES advisor Dennis Ostrowski from Saratoga Central Catholic school in Saratoga Springs, NY wrote me explaining an exciting project his seventh graders are incorporating into their second TechYES project. It is called the future cities project and is now in its second decade. The National Engineers Week Future City Competition is a program developed for seventh and eighth grade students to help them discover and foster interests in math, science and engineering.

Blogs link up a new kind of knowledge net

Yesterday when I blogged the website on Ancient Human Occupation of Britain my post was picked up at the weblog Archaeology in Europe. When I went to that blog, another post there was what the archaeologist David Beard who does the posting called “A very nice Website giving information about the ancient city of Aptera.” One more click, and I was wandering virtually among ancient Minoan stones reading old stories of the Muses.

Teaching like the pros do

A New York Times story today on the golf page reports that Tiger Woods’ coach Hank Haney has taken over as director of instruction at the International Junior Golf Academy located on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. This is a top school for which some students pay as much as $47,000 a year. The academy is free of the conventional general educational traditions and mores that shape a very great deal of the schooling experience. Golf is also unapologetically competitive. The academy will do what it judges most effective to teach golf to its students. With that background in mind it is instructive to note that podcasts and Web-based instruction are part of the mix, as reported in the article:
