How do you keep track of research online?

March 26, 2008

I am working on a few major research papers for grad school, so I have been thinking about how to best help myself stay organized in dealing with all of the research articles I am sifting through and notes I need to take, not to mention the painstaking process of citing all those articles! I have been looking for good tools to help me, especially web 2.0 tools that might keep me a bit more sane. Here is my progress…

I began thinking that a good start would be Google Docs & Spreadsheets. It appeals to me because I am already familiar with the interface, have tags set up for each course, and can access the document from any computer. It has great formatting, and seamlessly integrates with my daily Gmail and other Google obsessions. Because I enjoy security, I make sure to log in to https://docs.google.com, adding the s to make it secure. Ok, so I will draft my papers in Google Docs.

Time to Play-Word Press

March 23, 2008

I’ve been meaning to take a closer look at Word Press and Moodle for some time now, and I finally had a chance to play with Word Press this morning. Oy. I really, really like what I see so far.

Thanks to the pioneering efforts of James Farmer at IncSub, you too can set up your own free Word Press site. And if you have any blogging experience at all, finding your way around should be pretty straightforward. Word Press is a very robust open source software that has all of the features I’ve been yearning for in Manila in terms of easy to understand user levels, review of posts and comments, flexibility in what’s private and public, and a real nice, easy to understand “dashboard” that puts everything at your fingertips. Very nice.

The Dunoon/Georgia Connection in San Francisco

March 22, 2008

I love this blogging world. Where else can moments like this seem to keep happening? I keep getting blown away by such moments. A couple of weeks ago I found out that since NECC was in Atlanta this year my travel budget was letting me attend another conference. Several searches later I found a conference in San Francisco that fit the bill with what I wanted to learn. I only had a week to make it happen and the fares were out of sight. Yikes! I have some travel funds but they weren’t going to stretch to cover expenses with fares topping out at 5 or 600 dollars. I tried Hotwire for the first time and found an incredible fare through some special offer. You have to book it before you know the schedule but they guaranteed no more than one stop and that you will arrive on the same day. I went for it and lucked out with a non stop out and one stop returning with a fantastic fare of $269 round trip. I took that as an omen that I was meant to go and little did I know what was going to unfold. The conference has been absolutely awesome. I’ll be blogging about it for a while because my schedule has been jammed packed with some of the best sessions I have ever attended. I haven’t had many moments to stop and blog but the blogging will follow over the next few days. I want to share.

Why Johnny Won?t Post

March 9, 2008

WHY STUDENTS DON’T POST

“Why do some students resist participating in course discussion boards when they know their grade will suffer? How can students with polished social skills come across in online courses as uncooperative and unengaged, with short postings of little substance?” Tim Dotson (in “Why Johnny Won’t Post,” CONVERGE ONLINE, August 27, 2003) provides four categories for students’ failures to post:

Extraordinary Comebacks

March 8, 2008

Extraordinary Comebacks

Some time ago, the publishers of John A. Sarkett’s book Extraordinary Comebacks, asked me if I would like an advance copy of the book. I haven’t had a chance to read it, embroiled as I was in the end-of-the-year chaos. The book contains 201 vignettes — “stories of courage, triumph, and success” — from a variety of fields. Whatever your background, at least one of these stories will speak to you and encourage you to keep going.
