I received a comment from Barbara Dieu in reference to my “Blooming” Webloggers post. She is also a fan of Bloom’s taxonomy. She pointed to an excellent resource, Key Words and How to Proceed, that she has created for Bloom’s. I can’t wait to share this with my students this Thursday.
Her weblog, Bee-Online, is a meeting place for students to share opinions and discuss. There are links there that point to the student blogs. I enjoyed browsing through them this morning. Barbara has also created a rubric to evaluate the blogs.

This is a bit pricier than $60 for a web cam (and remember computers often come with them built in nowadays), but the Washington Post did this story:
Video Setup Tears Down Class Walls
Interactive Lessons Available From Afar

What I like about this is that students expand the walls of their classrooms and participate in classes and learning experiences that they wouldn’t have available otherwise.

In three weeks of February, the Barack Obama entry in Wikipedia had almost 2 million views and was the seventh most visited (and, really, second most visited in terms of content) article on the site. John McCain’s had 1.1 million. Hillary Clinton, who apparently more people “know” about, had about 422,000. In those same three weeks, the Wikipedia home page got over 140 million views.

Was cruising the UserLand site trying to find an answer to why Contributing Editors don’t seem able to edit their own posts once they are published, and I came across this message from Lawrence Lee quoting Michael Breidenstein, the Director of Instructional Technology for the Rock Island School District in Illinois:
“We have found Manila to be the ideal way for teachers to publish web pages. It has caught on in Rock Island and now we have Manila sites for our athletics, organizations, administration, schools, teachers and alumni. The sites vary since almost every site has a different managing editor. We are just starting to see teachers take their sites to the next level by having students as members. I realize our site design isn’t the fanciest, but we have found Manila to be the best way to have teachers take control of the content on their sites. Our Manila workshops continue to be our most popular. All workshops are optional and the Manila classes have been attended by everyone - school board members, support staff, teachers, students, alumni and even the superintendent have learned to publish web content with Manila!”

I got a call from Patrick McCloskey, a reporter for Teacher Magazine who is writing an article about Will. He was asking me questions about the Georgia-NJ Collaboration. It’s really funny how things work out sometimes because last evening I had been going through some boxes from my recent move. I came across files I had saved from that collaboration. The conversations between those students were exceptional. Even though this is from the 2002-2003 school year I thought it would be great to post as a best practice. Kristine was a high school students from Will’s journalism class who was mentoring Lucy (my fifth grader). She took a “Free Speech” article from Time for Kids and used the article to show the different elements and parts of the story. Not only did she explain what each part does but also what it should include. It was color coded and Kristine’s thoughts were put in “bold”. It was outstanding. It is worthy of being reposted:

I read the following via Doug’s Borderland blog.
Send your message in opposition to DOPA by going to the US Senate website Find Your Senators dropdown menu in the upper right corner of the page. and locate your senator with the Find Your Senators dropdown menu in the upper right corner of the page.
This is my letter to Lisa Murkowski. Feel free to model yours after this one. I used Vicki Davis’ blog post and Chistopher Harris’ wiki page as information resources.

So the project wiki run continues with this entry from Chris Craft in South Carolina whose students are prepping for a flat-ishSkype call with students at the American School in Lima, Peru next month. In this iteration, groups of kids are studying various aspects of the Peruvian culture and economy that will serve as the basis of their discussion. Chris is going to try to capture the event and hopefully he’ll be able to share it out later.

Ewa McGrail is an Assistant Professor of Language and Literacy from the Middle-Secondary Education and Instructional Technology Department. She came by one day last week and we had a spirited conversation about blogs and the possiblilities it held for literacy and language instruction. She had really taken a deep look at The Write Weblog and some other blogging projects. She teaches a small class of teachers on Wednesday evenings which just happens to be my late night! She asked me to do a session for her students and to address the following:

Last Friday I met again with Miss Neville’s second graders. They didn’t get to answer follow-up comments they had received because they were busy posting introductions. We wished we could do this for the whole day but unfortunately that couldn’t be. Miss Neville and I talked as they wrote. We decided that we’d use the class blog for them to post. We posted them under Miss Neville’s name and decided that we would label future posts from the students themselves in this manner:
